Technology event inspires second-year students of SG Newton: “This is pretty cool”

Second-year students of SG Newton from Hoorn were not in school this morning, but went to work with 10 different disciplines from construction, infrastructure, electrical and installation technology. The multi-day technology event, Tech Your Talent, hopes to inspire young people from North Holland to consider a career in technology.

For eight days, the various workshops of the Construction and Technology Campus in Heerhugowaard will be the stage for about 2,200 VMBO students from North Holland. During the event, the students gain knowledge about both the practical courses and the theoretical MBO-4 courses.

“Thanks to these activities, the students are briefly introduced to technology,” explains promotion officer Wilfred Blom. “But we think it’s especially important that we show how fun technology actually is with this playful way.”

“Perhaps this morning has convinced them to opt for the technology package in the future”

There is still a great demand for personnel from the technical sector. That is why Blom hopes to inspire, even if only a few students, with this event. The timing of the technology event is also convenient. “In March, these students have to choose a lesson package at their VMBO school,” says Blom. “Perhaps this morning has convinced them to opt for the technology package in the future.”

The students react mixedly to a future in technology. “I like doing these physical activities,” explains a SG Newton student, after changing a tire on a go-kart car with his mate. “But I already know what I want to be and that is cook!”

Nevertheless, the student understands that the event can inspire young people. “We never had much to do with technology at school, so it’s nice to experience that ourselves now.”

The ESPEQ construction training event will run until December 6.
