Club should take Real as a role model
According to the Spanish league, FC Barcelona still have to generate income from player sales before a possible signing of Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski, who is willing to emigrate. “As of today,” Barça cannot yet sign the 33-year-old top attacker in the Bundesliga due to financial constraints, said league president Javier Tebas on Tuesday at an event hosted by the Spanish news agency Europa Press.

The Catalans are aware of their difficult financial situation and therefore know exactly what they have to do to bring in the Munich player. “Fill the pantry as soon as possible,” Tebas said. “I don’t know if they (Frenkie) should sell de Jong or Pedri, but they need to generate revenue and sell assets.”

FC Barcelona is financially ailing with a debt of 1.35 billion euros. Nevertheless, they want to strengthen themselves in order – as club boss Joan Laporta explained – to be able to play for the championship title next season. In order to pay for expensive transfers and above all to be able to comply with the league rules for the total amount of salaries, you have to let several players go.
Tebas advised the Catalans to take arch-rivals Real Madrid as a model when it comes to financial management. The newly crowned Champions League winner has “worked very well over the past ten to twelve years,” said the LaLiga boss. For comparison: While Barça has spent a good 545 million euros more on players than it has earned in recent years, Real is “only” 146 million euros less in transfers (to all transfers from Barcelona/Real Madrid).
Struggles for Lewandowski: Fronts at Bayern are hardening
Recently, the fronts in the struggle for Lewandowski had hardened further. While those responsible at Munich are still insisting on the contract valid until 2023 and ruling out a departure, the Pole himself found clear words for the first time. At a national team press conference, Lewandowski said (quoted via “TVP“): “As of today, it’s clear that my story at FC Bayern is over. After what has happened in the last few months, I can’t imagine working together again. A change is the best solution for both sides. I hope that Bayern will not keep me just because they can.”
