Team Assen is preparing for Alpe d’HuZes: ‘Grief and pleasure are close together’

Team Assen today experienced the final preparation for the Alpe d’HuZes charity campaign. There was no training, but the team had time to relax together and get ready for tomorrow’s big day: climbing the Alpe d’Huez to raise as much money as possible for KWF Cancer Control.

A total of 140 students and supervisors from various Assen schools are in France for Alpe d’HuZes under the name Team Assen. “We tell our students that it is good to be able to do something for someone else,” says Christel de Jong, physical education teacher. “Unfortunately, almost everyone in their environment has someone who has to deal with cancer. So you are working on a great common goal. You notice that emotions such as sadness and pleasure are close to each other.”

In France, the members of Team Assen often think of Norah, a student who would participate in Alpe d’HuZes with Team Assen last year. “But on the day we left she was admitted to hospital,” says De Jong. “She’s had a lot of chemo and it goes up and down. But she never gives up, that’s so incredibly beautiful.”

All students of Team Assen take a photo of Norah upstairs and a special banner hangs in turn 14. De Jong: “Each student can put his or her name on the banner with a marker. If you go up six times, you also put your name on the banner six times. Finally, we give the banner to Norah and she sees how many times she has gone upstairs in her mind. We are all going to support her in this fight.”
