Taylor Swift: One in five believes presidential conspiracy theory

Taylor Swift is said to be Biden’s “secret agent” – many potential Trump voters think.

A conspiracy theory is currently circulating in the United States that Taylor Swift is secretly working for current President Joe Biden to support him in the next election. The rumor is becoming increasingly clear to Trump supporters, especially in view of the new clues that emerged from the Super Bowl. Almost a fifth of respondents to a survey now believe that Swift is involved in a covert government mission.

The survey was conducted by the Monmouth University conducted by telephone between February 8th and 12th and released on February 14th. A total of 902 adults were surveyed. 18 percent of people said that they believed in the theory about the singer – 46 percent had already heard about the matter before the survey. Speculations of this kind arose as early as mid-January 2024, when “Fox News” host Jesse Watters theorized that the 34-year-old was part of a CIA plan and served as a “facade for a covert political agenda.”

The conspiracy theory

Watters argued in a five-minute post that Swift’s skyrocketing career and popularity were suspicious. “Taylor Swift is the biggest star in the world… but have you ever wondered why or how she became so suddenly famous?” he began his talk. The moderator further referred to a clip from 2019, which comes from a conference with NATO participation. There, the musician was cited as an example of an influential person, and the Pentagon’s psychological warfare division reportedly suggested including her in combating online misinformation.

Trump voters increasingly believe in theory

According to Monmouth University, “71 percent of those who believe this identify with or lean toward the Republican Party, and 83 percent say they are likely to support Donald Trump in the fall.” Taylor Swift is more likely to vote for Biden, that However, it was foreseeable even without a conspiracy. She supported him in the 2020 election and was critical of Trump this year, so the idea that she would support the president again isn’t that far-fetched. However, this is still a far cry from the theory that she is some kind of secret agent working in Biden’s favor. At least there is no factual basis for this.

Biden’s team takes it with humor

After the Super Bowl, however, there was an X contribution from Biden’s team, which further fueled the rumor mill. After the Kansas City Chiefs, the team of Swift’s partner Travis Kelce, won the game in overtime, voices were raised that the game was rigged. The president and his team mocked the conspiracy theory on social media, writing: “Just as we thought it up.”

Higher voter turnout thanks to Swift?

Another result of the Monmouth survey comes as a bit of a surprise in contrast to the percentages above. While Swift hasn’t done any election advertising this year, she has urged her fans to vote. 68 percent of those surveyed support the singer’s efforts – although they can assume that Swift does not want to push Trump.
