Doctors discovered cancer shortly after Schlossberg gave birth to her daughter in May 2024. In the meantime, it appears to be a rare form of leukemia with a rare mutation known as Inversion 3, a genetic abnormality that only occurs rarely. She was recently told that her treatment had finished. “I couldn’t believe they were talking about me,” Schlossberg wrote in a column. “I was healthy, never sick. I exercised, lived healthily. I am dying, I have two young children.”

Schlossberg described the grueling treatment process, which included several chemotherapy treatments, two bone marrow transplants and participation in two clinical trials. She said she was also diagnosed in September with a form of the Epstein-Barr virus, which “destroyed her kidneys” and required her to learn to walk again.

“After my last major check-up, my doctor told me he might be able to keep me alive for another year,” she wrote. “It was like the sky fell on my head.”

Schlossberg, an environmental journalist, is the second daughter of former US Ambassador Caroline Kennedy and designer Edwin Schlossberg. Tatiana Schlossberg and her husband, George Moran, have a 3-year-old son and a 1-year-old daughter.

“All my life I have tried to be good, a good student, a good sister and a good daughter, and to protect my mother and never make her angry,” she writes. “Now I have added another tragedy to her life, to our family’s life, and there is nothing I can do to stop it.”

Schlossberg’s disease is yet another tragedy in the Kennedy family history, which has been struck by disaster many times over the years.

Assassination of JFK

The most talked about drama in the Kennedy dynasty was the 1963 assassination of presidential candidate John F. Kennedy (JFK) in Dallas. However, the Irish-American family has had many other dramas to deal with. In 1968, Robert was assassinated shortly after winning the presidential election in California.

In 1944, one of JFK’s brothers died in a plane crash. A sister of JFK followed in 1948, she also died in a plane crash.

To make matters worse, two of Robert’s sons died at the end of the last century and in 1999 JFK’s only surviving son, John F. Kennedy Jr., died in a crash with his sports plane. Jr.’s wife and sister-in-law also died in the accident. In 2019, Saoirse Kennedy Hill, Robert’s 22-year-old granddaughter, died of an overdose

A year later, two more Kennedys died. Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean (40) and her eight-year-old son. Maeve was the granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy who was assassinated in 1968. Maeve and her son died while kayaking.
