Talented AZ goalie takes responsibility for loss after blunders: “As if I let the team down”

Sometimes you’re the hero and other times you’re the schmuck. Unfortunately, Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro can speak to that. The very talented goalkeeper of Jong AZ made two huge mistakes against MVV (4-0). The guilty Owusu-Oduro stood in front of the camera afterwards, looking very disappointed. “Like I let my team down today.”

“I actually just had to shoot that ball away,” says Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro, looking back on the first goal conceded. “With this pitch I shouldn’t have cut that player out and certainly not in the fourth minute.”

Guilty

According to trainer Jan Sierksma, Owusu-Oduro was responsible for the defeat. That is why Jong AZ’s coach stood up for his 19-year-old goalie afterwards. “If a player is so guilty, then I think that as a coach you should not go over that again.”

Apart from this dramatic evening, Owusu-Oduro has received a lot of positive reviews. He trains the Alkmaar main squad every day and his contract runs until the summer of 2026.

Free spot

He could soon make his debut for coach Pascal Jansen’s team. First goalkeeper Mathew Ryan will be heading out with Australia for the Asian Cup after the winter break. This means that Hobie Verhulst or perhaps Owusu-Oduro will have to take over temporarily. “Of course you think about that situation and I always dream of playing for AZ 1.”
