Tah: Bayer Leverkusen must hold Wirtz, Diaby & Co. – close the gap to top teams

Closing the gap to top clubs

Central defender Jonathan Tah is counting on Bayer 04 Leverkusen not selling their best players to the highest bidder in order to be able to maintain their position as the top team in the Bundesliga. “Of course a club like Bayer 04 has to sell a top player every now and then. But if the club manages to keep certain heads longer, that would have a positive effect,” said the 26-year-old in a “Kicker” interview.

The most valuable players at the “Werkself” are Florian Wirtz (18; AV 70 million euros), Moussa Diaby (22; 45 million euros), Patrik Schick (26; 40 million euros) and Edmond Tapsoba (23; 40 million euros ). “When you have these ambitions as a club, you have to try to keep players like that,” explained Tah. “You have to give them the feeling that they are not stagnating here, but are developing decisively. Because of course it’s like this: If you lose two or three key players, you have to start again.”

Several Bayer professionals appear in the ranking of the biggest market value gainers in 2021. And top performers like Wirtz & Co. are out to increase their personal shares in 2022. However, Tah is not critical of the fact that some players see the club as a stepping stone to becoming a European heavyweight. “When a club like Real comes, you can’t blame your team-mate,” said the 26-year-old. “But you can also get to the point where a player no longer perceives this gap, this ‘next step to an absolute top club’ no longer seems imperative.”

In addition, Tah explained why he said goodbye to previous transfer intentions and extended his contract to 2025 last September. Under coach Gerardo Seoane, the defensive man should take on “a lot” of responsibility. “Yes, I proved to myself that I could take this step again here in this environment, without a change. If I compare it with the summer of 2020, the perception from the outside is now completely different.”
