Tina Punzel, third at the Olympics, gave the German water jumpers their first medal at the European Swimming Championships in Rome in the fourth final. The Dresdener won gold together with Lou Massenberg in the mixed synchronized from the 3m board after a strong performance.
With 294.69 points, the duo was ahead of Britons James Heatly/Grace Reid (290.76) and Italy’s Matteo Santoro/Chiara Pellacani (283.56).
The Swedes Elias Petersen/Emilia Nilsson Garip (283.50) missed the podium by a blink of an eye.
Previously, the start of the successful water jumpers had failed completely: In the team competition, it was only enough for fifth place, Massenberg only came fourth with Elena Wassen in mixed tower synchronized diving – as did European Championship debutant Jette Müller from the 1m board.
