Sydney Sweeney will only want to talk about her new film “Christy” at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday – and not about the controversial campaign of “American Eagle”, which recently made headlines.

Controversy about advertising campaign

“I am there to support my film and the people who are involved. I am not there to talk about jeans,” Sweeney said in an interview with “Vanity Fair” before the premiere. “The film is about Christy, and that’s exactly what it is about.”

The campaign that started in summer was criticized because the slogan “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans/Genes” was understood as an allusion to Eugenik. American Eagle said in August in a statement that it was only about jeans. Nevertheless, Donald Trump and Fox News received the campaign – while artists like Lizzo and Doja Cat rejected them publicly.

American Eagle recently published sales figures: the “Sydney Jacket” was sold out within a day, the “Sydney Jean” within a week. Both products are to be reproduced in November. Part of the proceeds flows to the Crisis text line.

Focus on “Christy” at Tiff

For SWEENEY it is already the second promo round that is overshadowed by the advertising debate. Already at the US cinema release of the thriller Americana, she didn’t talk to the press-together with co-star Halsey, she wanted to draw attention to the film.

Director Tony Tost, who also commented on the debate, said: “If you love cinema, you should know that cinema is coming first. This is cinema.” Rolling Stone was one of the most expected films at the TIFF. Sydney Sweeney plays the boxer Christy Martin in it, Ben Foster takes on the role of her manager and husband Jim Martin.
