European champion Lea Boy gave the German swimmers their ninth medal at the end of the open water competitions at the World Championships in Budapest. The German men got nothing.

The 22-year-old from Würzburg fought her way to silver after 5:24:15.2 hours in the photo finish. Boy had already won gold with the relay last Sunday. World Cup debutant Elea Linka, who had led the field for a long time, finished sixth in the 28-degree warm Lupasee.

In the men’s race, Andreas Waschburger (35) fought his way to eleventh place after 5:04:47.8 hours in the 25-kilometer race under great heat. World Cup debutant Ben Langner (Magdeburg/20) came in 13th in the 28 degree warm Lupasee.

“Actually, I had set myself the goal of eighth place, but I can live with eleventh in the world”said Waschburger, who won his first international medal ten years ago: “The water was very warm.”

Gold went to Italy’s Dario Verani in the final men’s race ahead of French titleholder Axel Reymond and Hungary’s Peter Galicz. 25 men started the race, 20 of whom finished.

For the German open water team, however, the World Championship competitions were extremely successful. All in all, Florian Wellbrock and Co. won five medals (2 gold/2 silver/1 bronze).
