Stockholm (dpa -Afx) – The Swedish public prosecutor initiates a preliminary examination after the damage to a lower seas kabel in the Baltic Sea due to presumably “severe sabotage”. A ship that is suspected of having committed sabotage was confiscated, as the authority announced on Sunday evening. The data cable between Sweden and Latvia was damaged in the early morning.
The cause is still unclear. The Latvia’s authorities had announced that the damage was due to the first indications of external influence.
In the past few weeks, alleged sabotage files caused a sensation from the so -called Russian shadow fleet of cables and lines in the Baltic Sea. The damage is said to have been deliberately caused by ship anchors. Russia has been waging a war against Ukraine for almost three years.
NATO ships and aircraft were also involved in the investigation of the incident on Sunday. The Latvian Navy had announced in the afternoon that when a ship was checked near the damage point, no suspicious activities on board or damage to the anchor were found. Two other ships were identified in the approximate area of the damage, it said in a message from the Latvian armed forces./MJ/DP/e.g.
