As the successor to Neestrup

Bo Svensson has apparently found a new challenge. According to consistent reports, the former head coach of FSV Mainz 05 and Union Berlin is taking over the vacant coaching position at FC Copenhagen. As “Bold” and “Tipsbladet” report, the 46-year-old Dane will succeed Jacob Neestrup, who was released on Sunday.

According to reports, Svensson will receive a long-term contract in Copenhagen with a term of at least four years. On Monday, the training will initially be led by assistant coaches Kristoffer Wichmann and Hjalte Bo Nørregaard. Neestrup has been in office at FCK since September 2022 and has an average points average of 1.84 in 181 games. The 38-year-old won the championship and cup double twice with the club.

FC Copenhagen had only gotten one point from the last six league games, which forced those responsible to take action. In the Champions League it was over after the league phase. Svensson has been without a club since his involvement with Union ended in December 2024. “The coaching job is my inner drive and gives my life meaning. In short: I really want to return to the sidelines – if the project fits,” Svensson revealed his willingness to make a comeback to Transfermarkt at the beginning of March.

The ex-professional also said during the interview: “I also think these breaks are nice to recharge the batteries and have time for other things. After my time in Mainz, we traveled as a family through Colombia and the USA, for example. But even during a commitment you have to consciously take rest periods so that you can pass on strength and energy to your players. The life of a coach is very ambivalent. There are days when you are the celebrated hero, and on other days they want to throw you right out the door. In these Extreme situations are the best way to get to know yourself. Through this sensory overload you also get to know your body and your emotions better and can channel them accordingly.”

That’s why coach Svensson canceled Werder Bremen

Before Daniel Thioune joined, Svensson was considered the favorite at Werder Bremen. However, he rejected the Green-Whites. His agent Marc Kosicke, who also looks after Jürgen Klopp’s affairs, said on Transfermarkt in mid-February with a smile: “We didn’t necessarily agree on Werder Bremen, and as a Bremen player I’m of course not entirely objective. But I can understand his motives. Bo has a family and is enjoying his time with them in Denmark after years of ‘wandering’. It wasn’t the right moment for him to jump in.” Svensson, who played 122 Bundesliga games for Mainz 05 and Gladbach, appeared most often for FC Copenhagen during his career (155 times).
