Suspects in the murder of rapper Boechi quarrel with each other in court

The two suspects in the murder of rapper Boechi, Churendy C. (44) and Chris Z. (24) pointed at each other in an emotional pre-trial hearing on Curaçao on Friday morning. According to Churendy, Chris fired out of nowhere. But according to Chris, who is seen as the shooter, there is a client, for whom both worked.

“It was never my intention to hurt or kill anyone,” Churendy said. “I tried to stop Chris from shooting Boechi. The idea was to steal his chain, but Chris lowered the window and shot at Boechi from inside the car.”

Ruchendell ‘Boechi’ Windster was shot dead on December 9 last year on the Rooseveltweg in Curaçao. He came from Tilburg, made music in Papiamentu and was on Curaçao for performances. The murder took place at a street food stand after a performance. In April, both suspects were arrested.

Prison uniform
The bald Churendy sat next to Chris in orange prison uniforms in court, each with both feet chained together. The interpreter next door did not have to take action, because the court, the Public Prosecution Service and the defense consisted of Curaçaoans. This is unique on the island, because most judges are of Dutch descent and do not speak Papiamento.

Niandy, the wife of the deceased rapper and his mother watched from Tilburg via a video connection. Boechi’s family, who lives in Curaçao, sat behind the press gallery. An irate aunt did not keep dry during the altercation between the two suspects and clenched her fists in frustration, after which security warned her not to make a sound. A moment later she left the room.

Full story
Churendy is suspected of driving the getaway car. During the hearing, his lawyer asked for the release of his client, because he is fully cooperating with the investigation and has already made all the necessary statements. He also voluntarily donated his DNA.

“I was not involved in Boechi’s murder,” Churendy said. “I drove three times along Rooseveltweg to look at Boechi, but I did not shoot. You can look at the cameras everywhere. I cooperated with the investigation because I did not kill anyone.”

During the session it became clear that many camera images were made on the busy road that evening. The judge asked the Public Prosecution Service to make a compilation for the substantive hearing in October.

Suspect Chris, who would have fired the bullets, indicates that they were not only there for Boechi’s chain. “Churendy needs to tell the whole story and explain why we moved on and who the people are who paid to kill Boechi.”

Chris informed the judge that C. was very well aware of the plan to kill Boechi for money. Before Z. walked to the car, C. would have checked the area. Z. called on him in the lawsuit “to tell the truth”.

No DNA
Chris Z., who is distantly related to Boechi, has not yet made a full statement, but says he is willing to do so. So far, however, he refuses to give up his DNA, which may lead to traces on the weapon that was used.

Boechi’s wife said via the video link that the family will claim compensation, but details will not be known until the substantive hearing of the case on October 27.
