Suspected gunman who shot five young people in France on Saturday arrested | Abroad

The suspected perpetrator of the Villerupt shooting was arrested on Wednesday and charged with attempted murder. Attorney François Capin-Dulhoste has announced this. He is a 38-year-old man with a long criminal record.

The suspect is also charged with “handling stolen goods, destruction with dangerous means and threats of death”, according to the prosecutor. He is being held in pre-trial detention.

Since 2001, he has been sentenced to prison 30 times, mostly for theft and violence, but also for traffic violations. The man was released on April 6 after two consecutive prison terms of six and 12 months.

On Saturday, a masked man opened fire in two municipalities near the French-Luxembourg border. Five young people were injured, three of them seriously. The perpetrator fled. Presumably this is a retaliation from the drug world, probably for the humiliation of a relative of the suspect. Film images of this would have been distributed on the internet.

Violence between two gangs in the region has been flaring up for some time. The local police have therefore asked for support from above against the growing drug trade at the border triangle with Belgium and Luxembourg. Until the end of the week, 63 members of the gendarme will assist the local agents with patrols.
