The shooting took place in the night from Friday to Saturday. Three Dutch soldiers, who were training near Indianapolis, had free time and visited the city. According to local media, they allegedly had an argument in a bar and then walked to their hotel. There they were shot at. The now deceased commando was taken to hospital in critical condition, his colleagues suffered minor injuries.

Kajsa Ollongren, (Defence, D66) called the shooting “deeply disturbed”, according to news agency AP. “We do a lot of training of our military in the United States, and we really don’t expect this to happen,” Ollongren said. Her American counterpart Lloyd Austin is said to have contacted her. According to Ollongren, there is “good contact” between the Dutch Marechaussee and the police in the American city.

According to the local police, several witnesses came forward after the shooting, including a video party, which allowed the suspect to be arrested on Monday. Police say they will provide additional information about the arrest at a later date.
