Suspect arrested in 1996 IRA bombing in Manchester Abroad

About 250 people were injured in the Manchester bombing at the time, but there were no deaths. According to the BBC, the attack is considered the largest bomb to explode on the British mainland since World War II. No one has ever been charged with the terrorist act claimed by the IRA, the Irish Republican Army.

The day of the attack, there were many football fans in the city in addition to shoppers, because later that day England and Scotland played against each other in London during the European Football Championship. The area was evacuated after police were alerted by phone. Nevertheless, hundreds of people were injured by the bomb, which was hidden in a truck. The city center was badly damaged.

In the last century, a bloody battle raged in and over Northern Ireland, known as The Troubles, that left 3,500 dead. The Catholic Republicans wanted the area to be part of Ireland again, the pro-British and Protestant unionists wanted Northern Ireland to stay in the United Kingdom. A fragile peace was concluded with the Good Friday Agreement in 1998
