The Toyota RAV4 was the best-selling car in the world last year. The SUV referred another Toyota to second place. The Japanese brand is in the top 10 with no fewer than four models.

This is evident from figures from car week, which is based on market researcher Felipe Munoz. He made a list of the 110 most popular car models of 2021† The Toyota RAV4 appears to have overtaken the Corolla, but there are more striking conclusions.

Munoz surveyed the actual car sales of the 106 largest markets, which together represent 99.32 percent of global sales. Striking: the Toyota RAV4 pushed the Toyota Corolla from the first place. The Toyota Camry and Hilux are also in the top 10.

Honda is also doing good business. The CR-V is at 3rd, the HR-V and its derivatives at 6 and the Accord and Civic at 10 and 11 respectively. Ford’s F-150, traditionally the big winner in the US home country, still finishes in seventh place. However, this makes it the first car on the list to show a sharp decline.

Kia Niro not in the top 110

The Tesla Model 3, on the other hand, sold no less than 40 percent more than in 2020. The Model Y, which was launched in the US in 2020, also performed well, finishing in 19th place with 392,000 units sold worldwide. Another EV that is doing well is the Chinese Wuling Mini EV. This Chinese sales topper finishes in 20th place just below the Model Y. Striking: the Kia Niro, which is doing particularly well in the Netherlands and Europe, does not reach the worldwide top 110.
