The employment relationship between the German goalkeeper and the Spanish traditional club seemed irreparable. But now there are unexpected statements from the highest position.
The conflict between Marc-André Ter Stegen and FC Barcelona had hit high waves in recent months. In the meantime, the captain’s armband had even been withdrawn from the German national goalkeeper. Joan Garcia’s commitment in summer brought additional tensions. Now sports director Deco has once again commented on the situation – and strikes much more conciliatory tones. Is that an unexpected turn between the club and player?
In an interview with the “Mundo Deportivo”, the former Barça professional made it clear: “There is no case.” With the transfer of Garcia, the back problems of the 33-year-old reacted and acted forward. “We took care of the goalkeeper position when Marc injured himself for the first time,” said Deco. You are not looking for a replacement for Ter Stegen.
The aim of the obligation was to avoid a “problem for the future”. As early as 2023, Barça had to act, said Deco. “The day-to-day business sometimes forces us to make certain decisions. Two years ago, it would not have been thought of signing a goalkeeper so quickly. The circumstances brought us to it,” said the 48-year-old.
The statements mark a significant change of sound compared to previous interviews. After Deco originally told La Vanguardia: “I don’t have to talk to him” because it was his job to “build the best possible team for the coach.” Now he is trying to compensate. The criticism of dealing with the long -standing goalkeeper had previously become publicly loud.
It remains to be seen whether the conciliatory words from the club tour can prevent the impending exit of Ter Stegens in winter. One thing is clear: Deco tries to calm the last tense relationship between the player and the association.
