Supermarkets are not eager to come to Delftlanden, the municipality of Emmen is looking for a solution

There is currently no concrete prospect of the arrival of a supermarket in the Emmer district of Delftlanden. Last year, the municipality of Emmen put a plot of land in the shop window for the arrival of a supermarket. Five parties showed interest, but that was it, a spokesperson said.

The development of the youngest neighborhood in Emmen lagged behind for years. Since the housing construction market has been on the rise, the time was also considered ripe for the arrival of a shopping center on Zandzoom in the district, with room for a supermarket. There is a plot available for this at two schools in the district.

The building may cover a maximum area of 1,500 square meters, with a building height of up to sixteen meters. There is also space for retail (933 square meters). Above the supermarket and other shops there is room for the arrival of apartments.

The municipality hoped to be able to make a choice from the parties at the end of last year or early this year, but they have now dropped out.

According to the municipality, the five parties have given ‘diverse reasons’ for not registering. “We will study these reasons carefully and formulate a new request,” a spokesperson said. “With an amended request, we have full confidence that this retail location will be developed.”

Aldi announced in the autumn of 2022 that a branch in the Delft countries is not possible. The presence of around ten thousand households in the nearby area is a must for this, a spokesperson said at the time.

According to the Land Registry, 625 households currently live in the district. This equates to more than two thousand inhabitants.
