Superior Nadal beats Ruud and also wins the fourteenth final at Roland Garros | NOW

Rafael Nadal won Roland Garros for the fourteenth time in his career on Sunday. The Spanish tennis legend had no child at Casper Ruud in the final and won his 22nd Grand Slam title in Paris: 6-3, 6-3 and 6-0.

In a not too high-quality final of two hours and twenty minutes, the 36-year-old Nadal made significantly fewer unnecessary mistakes than the eleven-year-younger Ruud, who was in a final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career. The Norwegian was only able to offer a match to the clay king in the second set.

With his fourteenth overall win at Roland Garros, Nadal improves his own Grand Slam record, which now stands at 22 titles. The current number five in the world won the Australian Open earlier this year, taking away from his rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, who have each won 20 titles.

At 36 years old, Nadal can become the oldest winner of Roland Garros. The Spaniard dethrones Andrés Gimeno, who triumphed in 1972 at the age of 34. Last year, Djokovic was the best in Paris, after beating Nadal in the semi-finals.

This year, Nadal defeated his Serbian rival in the quarterfinals. On the way to the final battle, the gravel king had also dealt with Botic van de Zandschulp (3-0). Nadal lost only seven sets in the seven matches in Paris. He won all his finals at Roland Garros in which he participated.

It was not self-evident that Nadal would win Roland Garros again. In the run-up to the Grand Slam tournament in Paris, he struggled with the aftermath of a lingering foot injury, which also kept him sidelined for a long time last year. At the clay tournament of Rome and Madrid he was eliminated early, but in Paris there was no size for him.
