Trabzon (dpa) – Trabzonspor is the Turkish football champion for the first time since 1984. A 2-2 (1-0) win over Antalyaspor on Saturday was enough for the team from the port city of Trabzon to celebrate the title three games before the end.
With a nine-point lead over pursuers Fenerbahce and the direct comparison against the team from Istanbul, Trabzonspor can no longer be relegated from first place. Only once since 1985 has a team from Istanbul not won the Süperlig. For Trabzonspor it is the seventh championship title in the club’s history.
