Supelega, Ceferin: “Nobody wants it, except those who only think about money”

The Uefa president returns to the project announced and suspended last year: “Prepared while they were shaking hands, I receive meaningless judicial cases”

“Nobody wants the Super League, except those who think that football is just a matter of sulphi”. Thus the president of UEFA, Alexander Ceferin, returns to talk about the project announced and suspended last year within two days. He did it in an interview granted to the “Journal du Dimanche”.

The origin

“When, in 2019, we were discussing the new format of the Champions League, the push started”. This is the theory of Ceferin, who confides his conviction on the birth of the Superlega project, without hiding resentment: “They prepared it while they shook hands with us, they discussed it three years before the tear”. A strategy conceived by some clubs that didn’t work: “They were counting on twelve clubs to break up and the others to follow them, but it lasted 48 hours. I remember two particularly stressful days, on the phone from morning to evening”

Relationships

While most of the companies involved in the project have retracted their position, relationships with three of them are certainly not exciting. Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid are not simple interlocutors of Ceferin: “I have no problems with them. They have tradition and I respect them, but I have never heard from them anymore.” On the legal level, however, something is still boiling in the pot, as confirmed by the president of UEFA: “I continue to receive meaningless judicial cases. The European Court of Justice has not yet ruled, all EU governments support us and so does the European Commission, the European Parliament, the British government “. In short, Ceferin is not alone. With a certainty, the Super League will not start: “For sure in the next ten years there will be no Super League, because nobody wants it except those who think that football is only a question of money”.
