Finnish musician Lauri Porra tells in public with his Facebook post a cautionary example of photo copyright.

– A cautionary tale and the confession of a copyright offender follow, he begins his text in a Facebook post.

– At the beginning of the year, I won the Jussi award for my music Myrskyluoto Maija – to the movie, the next morning I made a thank you update on my social media, as usual. In a fit of emotion, I used a picture of myself with the award I found on the internet as the picture for my update, the picture in question was a picture commissioned and owned by the Finnish Information Agency from the previous evening. I didn’t ask for permission and I didn’t even credit the photographer, which is of course a stupid thing to do for someone whose income consists of copyrights for a significant part, Porra admits.

After some time, the bill dawned on him.

– A couple of weeks ago, I received a €237 bill from STT’s copyright supervisor for copyright infringement and an order to remove my update as soon as possible. After talking with STT’s representative for a long time, they agreed to reasonable the bill to 190 euros due to the circumstances. That’s how much the thank you update cost me. My apologies to the rights holders, he writes in his update.

Lauri Porra has received some nice messages on his update.

– That is a good and honest confession. Just as many people think (or don’t think) that I should just put that music in the background of my video, one commented.
