De Brabandere emphasizes the danger of the sea: “We make a call to be careful. The sea is not a swimming pool. Even though you can perfectly swim 1000 meters in the swimming pool, that does not mean that you can just do that in the sea. The currents are unpredictable. Always listen to the rescuers, otherwise you also endanger them.”
Last year, rescuers in Knokke-Heist had to intervene four times for a rescue during their service hours. If rescuers are present, it is permitted to swim in the sea between 10.30 am and 6.30 pm.
