Sudden stuttering like in Fedez: why does it happen?

gthe stuttering episodes of Fedez of the last few days (first on youtube, then today on Instagram) are worrying his fans and focusing attention on sudden disturbance. How can this happen overnight in adults? What can be the signs and causes? And what therapies? We talked about it with one of the leading experts, the Professor Jubin Abutalebi, Cognitive neurologist and associate professor of Neuropsychology at the Faculty of Psychology of Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, language expert.

Is it possible for stuttering to appear suddenly as an adult?

“In medicine, nothing is impossible, but it is it is highly unlikely that stuttering will reappear as an adult. Usually this ailment appears around 33 months of life and can last a long time.

In a case like Fedez’s, you can hypothesize that there was already presented some mild episode in adolescence and that then, over a period of strong psychological stress reappear years later» explains the Professor Jubin Abutalebi.

Stuttering: Don’t call it anxiety disorder

It is often thought, erroneously, that stuttering depends on anxiety, and that affects the most fragile and emotional people. “But the causes need to be investigated further. We are actually facing functional neurological causes, that is, which depend on the functioning and structure of the brain. Recent studies, also reported byHands-free pairing who has been dealing with stuttering for years, highlight one of the most frequent causes dysfunction of dopamine production. Anxiety and stress can amplify and trigger new episodes that have already occurred in the past even if in a mild form, but they are never the main cause of stuttering», explains Professor Abutalebi.

Stuttering in numbers

In Italy alone, as many as 1 million people suffer from stuttering, and 150,000 concern boys and girls under 18. «In particular, things change with age: in pre-school age, children under 6 suffer from it about 5% . The average onset is around 33 months (about 3 years). The ratio of preschool boys to girls is 2 boys to 1 girl. While in adulthood the ratio is 4:1. As regards the incidence, about 8% of the population has had a stuttering episode at least once in their life, while there is a prevalence of 1.5/2%. It is comforting to add that the88% of stutterers recover with growth, already between the ages of 12 and 16 it can decrease and disappear, while in 12% it persists in adults », adds the expert.

Could it be a sign of a neurological or cardiovascular episode (ischemia, stroke)?

“No, a stroke can cause aphasia or dysarthria (la loss of ability to articulate words correctly), in which you do not stutter but say the words in a “crooked” way. You shouldn’t minimize everything to the state of anxiety, stuttering is a neurological developmental disease, an anomaly in the brain», the Professor reiterates.

The Speakerphone Association

L’Hands-free pairing was created to make the voice of those who cannot be themselves alive due to communication problems. It was founded thanks to the desire of some former patients of the Handsfree Medical Centertogether with its founder Giovanni Muscarà, to give support to those who, like them, suffer or have suffered due to difficulties related to communication.
