Private landlords will have to invest heavily in making homes more sustainable in the coming years, but their investment scope is limited by the rent freeze on regulated rental homes (from 1 July 2021). With the Subsidy Scheme for the Sustainability and Maintenance of Rental Properties (SVOH), Minister Hugo de Jonge wants to encourage private landlords with regulated rental properties to invest in making homes more sustainable.

The new subsidy scheme will come into effect on 1 April 2022. From that moment on, landlords can actually apply for the subsidy for energy advice, energy-saving measures and maintenance. The maximum subsidy per home is 6,000 euros and is intended for landlords with a maximum of 100 regulated homes or landlords who rent out regulated rental homes above the liberalization limit. Landlords apply for a subsidy for at least two measures. In addition, they can also receive a subsidy for energy advice, provided that two other measures for energy saving or maintenance are carried out.

The subsidy scheme is intended to help landlords in the private sector to become more sustainable. An estimated 330,000 homes owned by private landlords are estimated to qualify for this subsidy scheme.
