Defending champion VfB Stuttgart after a spectacular game at second division club Eintracht Braunschweig reached the 2nd main round in the DFB Cup – the teams needed 20 penalty to decide in penalties.

Stuttgart won 8: 7 in a penalty shootout, after extra time it was 4: 4 (4: 4, 3: 3, 1: 1).

Sven Köhler had taken Braunschweig in the lead (8th), Himedin Demirovic then put VfB in the lead with two goals (12th/60th). Fabio di Michele Sanchez made the big surprise with two goals for Braunschweig almost tangible (77./85.), But Nick Woltemade ensured the equalization (89.). In the extension, Stuttgart came to the lead by an own goal of Sanoussy BA (92nd), Braunschweig equalized by Christian Conteh (105.).

In the penalty shootout, Lorenz Assignon scored the decisive goal, Stuttgart’s goalkeeper Alexander Nübel parried three penalty.

Sven Köhler shot from almost 30 meters, Stuttgart’s goalkeeper Alexander Nübel slipped into the goal between the fingers (8th). “A very modest start”Nübel admitted in the sports show. “We got a lot of goals, that can’t be.” But Stuttgart immediately found the answer: Maximilian Mittelstädt brought the ball from the left into the penalty area, where Ermedin Demirovic extended the ball to the right inside post into the goal (12th).

Extension: Braunschweig comes back again

The teams did not come down in the extension either: Stuttgart’s Tiago Tomas played the ball inwards from the right, Sanoussy Ba unhappily pushed the ball into their own goal (92nd).

Braunschweig did not let up: Lukas Frenkert came to a header, but failed on the latte (99.). Christian Conteh then cheered Braunwieg a fourth time: Marie alluded him on in the penalty area, he turned at lightning speed and surprised Nübel with a massive shot (105.).

In the penalty shootout, Alexander Nübel made the supposed preliminary decision, he parried the penalty of Johan Gomez and Max Marie. But Stuttgart’s Chema failed to goalkeeper Hoffmann, his team -mate Dan -Axel Zagadou shot over – Braunschweig also returned in the last act.

After ten penalty, there was also an extension in penalty shooting and it continued: four penalty were on both sides. Nübel parried the 19th penalty of the evening against Frenkert – Lorenz Assignon met and decided the game. “I don’t know how well I can fall asleep today”said Nübel. “The game will keep me a little more.”

VfB meets Gladbach, Braunschweig travels to Darmstadt

VfB Stuttgart will meet Borussia Mönchengladbach (3:30 p.m.) in the Bundesliga on Saturday. VfB had lost the opening game at Union Berlin 1-2.

For Eintracht Braunschweig, the 2nd Bundesliga continues on Saturday, then the team will play at Darmstadt 98 (1 p.m.). Eintracht is currently in sixth place with two wins from three games.

Background: Lower Saxony’s Interior Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) had recently left open whether Derby’s between Eintracht Braunschweig and Hannover 96 would run with the full guest control. “If the police do not consider the concept presented sufficiently, then it has to be controlled. In drastic cases, this can also mean the exclusion of guest fans”the SPD politician emphasized to the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung. Even declining falls in violence and crimes in football are not contradicted: “There are games in which a safe football experience without a massive police presence is currently inconceivable.”

In the second half of the season, only a maximum of 2,541 supporters from Braunschweig in Hanover were allowed to be there, through a boycott of the organized fan scene only 800. The authorities justified their procedures with repeated riots in the games between the two clubs.

DFL Supercup ensures appointment after the Cup weekend

The game was only held after the usual cup weekend because VfB Stuttgart and Bayern Munich played as a master and cup winner at the DFL supercup on this date.

The DFB has increased the premiums in the DFB Cup slightly compared to the pre-season. Anyone who reaches the 2nd main round has 635,658 euros. Anyone who wins the trophy will cut almost eleven million euros. The cup winner is also certain of the quallification for the Europa League.
