Flexible working hours, home office or a fruit basket? A current study shows which benefits really score points with employees and which additional offers hardly inspire anyone anymore.
Employee benefits: Flexibility and added value are convincing
According to Circula’s current benefits report, 86 percent of employees in Germany receive additional benefits from their companies. But only 48 percent access them regularly. For 11 percent, the offers are too difficult to access or do not suit their life situation. Another nine percent don’t even know what benefits their company offers.
A clear favorite among the benefits is the mobility subsidy: 40 percent of the employees surveyed would like financial support for mobility. But so far only 28 percent have received this subsidy. The situation is similar with flexible forms of work, which 36 percent of those surveyed want – but only 34 percent get.

Flexibility and health promotion as top benefit trends
In addition to mobility subsidies, flexible working time models and home offices continue to be employees’ favorites. As t3n reports, employees increasingly want work opportunities that are independent of location and time and that improve their work-life balance. Especially in a hybrid working world, it becomes clear that benefits can be used flexibly. “In a hybrid working world, benefits must be able to be redeemed both in the home office and in the office,” explains Skatchkov in the Circula report.
Fruit basket, water, etc.: What no longer convinces employees
Many companies still rely on traditional benefits that no longer meet the expectations and needs of the modern workforce. A frequently mentioned example is the classic fruit basket in the office. Such feel-good extras may seem nice at first glance, but they rarely create noticeable added value for employees and hardly contribute to long-term employee loyalty. A public transport ticket for employees who mainly work from home is also one of the benefits that ignores the reality of many employees. Such local offers are simply not flexible enough and are therefore hardly used.

Individual benefits are the key to employee retention
In an increasingly diversified world of work, it is no longer enough to offer general benefits that are the same for all employees. The needs of the workforce today are more diverse than ever before and vary depending on their living situation, place of work or personal priorities. Flexible working hours and home office options are at the top of the list for many employees, while others prefer additional financial benefits such as mobility grants, shopping vouchers or company pension plans. Individually tailored offers are therefore crucial to increasing employee satisfaction and ensuring their long-term loyalty to the company.
