Who can call themselves the king and queen of the dance floor in 2025? Students from three primary schools in Hoogeveen compete for that title during a dance competition.
The laces are tied and the first steps are practiced on the dance floor. Dozens of dancing couples were present in the village hall in Stuifzand on Thursday to challenge each other.
And the goal? Dragging a big fat cup home. “Yes, that’s what we’re going for,” says dancer Byron from OBS ‘t Rastholt primary school. Together with his dance partner Aelia, he will soon have to dance the cha-cha-cha for the audience and jury. “Very exciting, you don’t know how the jury will judge you,” Aelia laughs.
All morning long the feet are on the floor. First a start is made with the semi-finals, then 6 of the 12 couples advance to the final. With the competition, the organization hopes to convey the joy of dancing and moving to the children. But there is another thought behind it: the young people also learn some life lessons.
“As a man, how do you ask a lady to dance? How do you bow before the dance and how does a lady bow back? These are all etiquettes that they learn and we taught them during five lessons,” says organizer Cinthia Botten from DanCin dance school in Stuifzand.
