Strong PSV beat FC Twente and now await a cup cracker against Feyenoord

Who will stop PSV this season? The Eindhoven team cannot be beat in the Eredivisie and also made an impression in the TOTO KNVB Cup on Wednesday evening. PSV certainly did not draw a small one with FC Twente, but the difference in level was quite large: 3-1. The cracker against Feyenoord is scheduled for next Wednesday in the cup tournament.

PSV coach Peter Bosz did not choose the same names as last Saturday when Excelsior was defeated 3-1. Under the crossbar was Joël Drommel, who replaced first goalkeeper Walter Benitez in the cup. Yorbe Vertessen was given the confidence in the left front and that was at the expense of Malik Tillman. The latter was allowed to appear at the last minute as a replacement for Joey Veerman, who dropped out during the warm-up.

Strong initial phase
Not a single snowflake fell and so the conditions in the Philips Stadium were fine. It was chilly, but the PSV players made sure that the supporters got warm in the initial phase. The Eindhoven team rolled over FC Twente and it was a miracle that it was still 0-0 after fifteen minutes.

Former PSV goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall had to fish in the nineteenth minute after a beautiful goal by Yorbe Vertessen. The Belgian played the ball with Luuk de Jong and scored very hard: 1-0. Vertessen paid back the confidence not only with a great goal, but also with a number of good actions. He is still in the interest of the German Union Berlin, but Peter Bosz does not want to lose the wing attacker.

Tactical plan
After the 1-0, PSV continued to put pressure everywhere on the field and FC Twente barely had any space to build a decent attack. The guests became dangerous once, but striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel’s slider lacked power and direction. An injury treatment for defender Robin Pröpper was the opportunity for FC Twente coach Joseph Oosting to call his team to the sidelines to discuss the tactical plan. With success, because the team gained more control. PSV became dangerous through De Jong, but his shot ended up in the side netting.

Beautiful goal
In terms of football, the start of the second half could not be compared to that of the first. But if football does not go as desired, De Jong’s head is a weapon. The strong striker towered over his opponent at a corner and nodded in: 2-0. More than five minutes later, PSV’s third attacker had also scored. And how. Johan Bakayoko was too quick for the defense and shot the ball beautifully into the corner: 3-0.

The game seemed decided, but after 68 minutes it became a bit exciting due to Manfred Ugalde’s goal. A goal with a significant offside smell, but due to the lack of VAR the score was 3-1. The goal gave FC Twente some more confidence and some chances in the final phase, but PSV did not let the visitors get any closer.

Good news for PSV was the return of Hirving Lozano. The Mexican was struggling with a hamstring injury, but had been training with the group for a while. Noa Lang also came on, giving the PSV coach even more choice in the coming matches.

Feyenoord
With the win, PSV will go to De Kuip next Wednesday in the eighth final of the TOTO KNVB Cup to face Feyenoord. First, the leader in the Eredivisie goes to FC Utrecht on Sunday. With a win, PSV will break the wins record from the start of the competition.
