Strong Alec Segaert 19th at World Cup

The Belgians were numerically supreme in the World Cup for promises. Five compatriots were still part of the remainder of the platoon, which was about fifty men strong. Also the West Flemings Vito Braet and Alec Segaert.

In the penultimate round, the second of the World Time Trial Championship jumped in a leading group of four, with the Frenchman Le Berre, the Czech Vacek, and the Kazak Fedorov. The four had a gap of twenty seconds on the peloton where the Belgians kept control. On the slopes Segaert had a hard time, and he had to chase Fedorov, and Vacek, together with Balmer who had returned. Segaert resisted heaven and earth, and was able to limit the damage. He was swallowed by the chasing group.

Fedorov and Vacek struggled to maintain their minimal lead, and behind that, everyone looked at each other. The lead grew to fourteen seconds, before Segaert again tried to drive towards the two. In vain, the two stayed ahead, and in the sprint with two, Fedorov was clearly stronger than Vacek. The chasers’ sprint was won by Waerenskjold, the gold medalist of the World Time Trial Championships.

Alec Segaert eventually became nineteenth. The first Belgian was Jenno Berckmoes in tenth place.
