Striker Michail Antonio was seriously injured in a car accident. Now his coach spoke up with an update.

As images of Michail Antonio’s wrecked car began circulating, some fans feared the West Ham United striker might not be able to play football at all. That’s how bad the Jamaican international’s completely wrecked car looked. You can read more about the accident here.

The first diagnosis already gave a slight all-clear. We were “only” talking about a broken lower leg, which had already been operated on. West Ham coach Julen Lopetegui was optimistic about Antonio’s recovery at the press conference ahead of Monday’s league game: “The most important point is that he is alive and well. He broke his femur but I’m sure he will recover . Now it’s about time. It takes time.”

Antonio should still get the time he needs despite his contract expiring. According to a report in the Daily Mail, West Ham is considering extending his contract. A broken lower leg takes months to heal; for Manuel Neuer, after the skiing accident in December 2022, it took a total of ten months before he was back on the football pitch for Bayern.

A contract extension with Antonio would be reminiscent of a similar gesture. In autumn 2021, West Ham extended the contract with defender Angelo Ogbonna when he seriously injured his knee.
