Striker Anthony Ujah happy but Union reluctant to talk

Union attacker Anthony Ujah will play against 1. FC Köln (8.30 p.m. / DAZN) against his past on Friday.

Anthony Ujah (31) is looking forward to Friday. At 8:30 p.m., his old love, Cologne, is visiting the Alte Försterei. The attacker had his best time at FC from 2012 to 2015 (102 competitive games / 36 goals).

Ujah: “Not only because of football, but also because of life there. I know the city well.” His house in Junkersdorf, about a kilometer from the Cologne stadium, will be the center of his life after his career. Now the Nigerian (7 caps) wants to annoy FC with Union. Ujah: “It’s something special for me. We want to keep the three points in Berlin.”

Ujah is finally part of the team again. So far in 2022, he has managed three brief assignments after suffering from major knee problems for over a year. Only a second operation in the summer of 2021 brought healing. Ujah: “I am grateful that I have the opportunity to continue playing football. There were times when I didn’t know if it would go on. Now I enjoy every day. I’m just happy, the family is healthy.”

Ujah knows he’s at the bottom of Union’s forward rankings. But until the end of the contract in the summer he wants to give everything. And then? Ujah: “As of now, I assume that I will leave the club after the season. There are no talks as of now.”

But Ujah wants to keep playing football. He feels fit. What he needs is regular match practice. “Then I’ll be the old Toni.” Ujah can imagine moving to the second division or abroad. Ujah: “It’s about what goes well with the family. It doesn’t just have to go to the Cologne region.”
