Goalkeeper Florian Müller (25) will play in a competitive game for the first time since his return in the summer in SC Freiburg’s second-round encounter in the DFB Cup. Freiburg coach Christian Streich announced that the substitute keeper will replace regular Noah Atubolu (21) against second division club SC Paderborn on Wednesday (6 p.m./Sky).
“He deserves it,” said Streich, justifying the decision. This applies to his performance in training and his support of the young number one. Müller was on loan from Mainz 05 to SCF in the 2020/21 season and was between the posts in 31 Bundesliga games, with six clean sheets.
Last summer, the former junior national goalkeeper came back to Breisgau from VfB Stuttgart for a fee of 1.5 million euros, but has so far been left behind by Atubolu. The DFB junior has played all competitive games so far this season, including in the DFB Cup and the Europa League. “Because of his performance, what he brings in and his stability,” the talent should be given a break in the cup, explained Streich.
