Storm certainly isn’t raging hurricanes or tornadoes, it’s rather a gentle swirl of air currents

A summer breeze and a spring storm, these are associations that arise in the new performance by the choreographer duo Andrea Leine and Harijono Roebana. In Storm certainly no hurricanes or tornadoes, rather it looks like a quiet swirl of undulating air currents. That is in the choreography in which six dancers can each give their own twist to rotating movements and dance circles that hang out of balance.

Kris Mohammed Adem, originally from Cyprus, echoes most clearly traces of Greek folk dances with whirling and springy steps – these are an important source of inspiration for this collaboration between LeineRoebana and Composer Laureate Calliope Tsoupaki. Like a bubbling vortex, it always pops up between five colleagues.

Andrea Pisano, born in Sardinia, chants halfway in Italian the four elements fire, water, earth, air. But these linguistic eruptions, including the howling of a manatee, mainly disturb the Mediterranean atmosphere in which individuals search for a shared collectivity without having to give up their individuality. One walks by in a light blue circle suit in accordion shape, the other dons a cake dress with layers in shades of sea blue. These are more sculptural poses with the signature of fashion designer Carlijn Veurink than they determine the freedom of movement within the choreography.

Tsoupaki’s new composition does just that, which is blown through the room by three musicians walking around like a moving wind organ. A humming double bass, a wailing clarinet and a counter-sputtering theorbo provide fine clouds of dust in an otherwise somewhat even performance. This may be due to the flat design in Nieuwegein. Or the storm that has died down just too early in this exciting collaboration between dance and new music. Next time sow a little more wind, to reap a sky-clearing storm.
