Storm blows roof off animal shelter: “One blow and off went the plates”

Major storm damage to ‘t Schuthok animal home in Den Helder. This afternoon the entire roof of the outdoor accommodation was blown away by the strong wind. “The steel beams were hanging in the trees further away,” says Marjan Groof of ‘t Schuthok. Because there was a danger that the canopy would end up on the N250 national road, she immediately called the fire brigade. “Very happy with the men.”

“We were standing outside around four o’clock when we heard a huge bang,” says Marjan Grooff from ‘t Schuthok animal home. “A colleague suddenly saw the roof of the kennels go into the air. These are steel beams with corrugated sheets. That was quite a shock. Fortunately, the dogs were all inside because of the storm.”

Gardener

The damage is extensive. In addition to the canopy, several skylights in the quarantine areas, among others, are broken and there are fragments of the canopy on the dog fields. Grooff: “They are not usable at the moment, but check it out, our gardener was still on the dog field five minutes before.”

“Luckily we escaped unscathed,” says Grooff with relief. “The priority is the safety of the animals and colleagues. Fortunately, no one was injured. We are well insured and we will see about the rest. The dogs are also shocked and have been given an extra dessert to chew on.”
