Representatives of the USA and Ukraine have started discussions in the US state of Florida about ways to end the Russian war of aggression.
The head of the Ukrainian delegation, Rustem Umyerov, announced this on Telegram. “We have been given clear instructions – to protect Ukraine’s interests, ensure substantive dialogue and move forward based on the progress made in Geneva,” he wrote.
On behalf of the US side, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner attended the meeting. According to officially unconfirmed reports from US media, the Shell Bay Golf Club was chosen as the conference location.
Rubio wants lasting peace in Ukraine
Rubio emphasized on site that it was not just about ending a war. In videos from journalists present and distributed on US media and social networks, the US Secretary of State can be heard highlighting Ukraine’s economic potential. “Ukraine has enormous opportunities for real prosperity.”
However, this cannot be achieved by ending the war alone. “So it’s not just about peace agreements.” It’s about creating a path that guarantees Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and prosperity. In addition, it should be ensured that Ukraine never has to fight another war, said Rubio.
Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Since then, the country has defended itself with the help of Western supporters. Despite talks about peace, Russia continues to attack Ukraine with undiminished severity.
Zelensky is hoping for rapid progress
On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he had sent a negotiating team to the USA for talks. In his evening video message broadcast in Kiev, he said, “it is quite realistic to finalize the steps in the next few days to determine how the war can be ended with dignity.” The necessary steps must be worked out quickly and substantially.
Zelensky had US President Donald Trump’s 28-point plan, which critics called a Russian wish list, revised during negotiations in Geneva with European and American representatives. In the USA there are still controversial points. The modified plan is to be presented to the Russian leadership in Moscow in the coming days.
