This story is like a little football fairy tale: in the summer of 2021 he was sorted out by Hamburger SV, two years later offensive all-rounder Moritz-Broni Kwarteng has now switched to the German Bundesliga. On Thursday, VfL Bochum announced the signing of the 25-year-old from second division club 1. FC Magdeburg.

The clubs involved did not comment on the financial framework details of the deal, but it is known how long the Stuttgart native will be tied to the Ruhr area club: The new working paper ends in summer 2027.

“We’ve been working intensively on Moritz-Broni Kwarteng for a long time, so it’s all the better that the transfer has now been completed,” said Marc Lettau, technical director of VfL Bochum 1848, in an official statement on “vfl-bochum .de” quoted.

And further: “Momo is a player who has developed enormously in the past season and whose profile is an ideal match for Castrop street football. He can be used variably on offense, has a pronounced box-to-box play and is due to his Dynamism and speed are an additional invigorating element for our game.”

Kwaiteng, who took his first steps in the youth department of VfB Stuttgart before moving to the youth team of RB Leipzig, later to the substructure of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and finally to HSV, explained: “The Bundesliga is a big challenge, the huge enthusiasm for me triggers. I will do everything to be successful there with VfL.”

VfL Bochum allegedly digs deep into their pockets

A few years ago there was no way of knowing that he would get the chance to tackle the “challenge” of the Bundesliga at all. After Kwarteng showed strong performances in the youth team at HSV, he received a professional contract and made three appearances in the 2nd Bundesliga in 2020/21, but at the end of the season they parted ways, and Kwarteng looked for months for a new employer.

He finally found the same in 1. FC Magdeburg, where shortly before his former HSV youth coach Christian Titz had taken over as coach. Kwarteng flourished in Magdeburg, rose to the second division with 1. FCM and excelled there in 2022/23 with ten goals and three assists in 29 appearances.

As a reward, he is now going to VfL Bochum in the 1st Bundesliga. Incidentally, according to “Bild”, one million euros will go to Magdeburg. A sum that Bochum has not put on the market for a player for a long time.
