1. FC Magdeburg has been waiting for a home threesome for eleven months. The long-awaited success was also not achieved against the weak Eintracht Braunschweig. For a long time it looked like a victory.

The curse remains. 1.FC Magdeburg still cannot win any home games. Even against Eintracht Braunschweig, coach Christian Titz’s team was unable to win a game that was very superior for long stretches. In the end it was a disappointing 1:1 (1:0) for the hosts. This means the FCM still jumps to the top of the table.

Eintracht, on the other hand, won an unexpected point. Outnumbered for most of the game, the Braunschweig professionals still maintained their fighting spirit and fought for this draw with luck and skill. A point gain that benefits Lower Saxony in the relegation battle.

“We got a ball on our goal and it was in. It was a totally dominant game for us for a long time. That’s the way it is in football when you don’t continue to play a game like that uncompromisingly until the end. That’s what we were missing.”says Magdeburg coach Titz to the Sportschau.

“It’s not that easy in our situation. This is a brutally good team that we met here. This is a small step, we can build on it.”said Eintracht defender Ermin Bicakcic to the Sportschau.

Short celebration after taking the lead

Before the game kicked off, spectators, officials and players remembered the victims of the terrorist attack at the Magdeburg Christmas market.

As soon as the game started, there was a brief celebration on the Magdeburg side. The spectators briefly celebrated their team’s quick lead, only to fall silent again until the 10th minute.

FCM playmaker Baris Atik shot from 17 meters and hit the left inside post of the Braunschweig goal, from where the ball jumped over the line for a 1-0 lead (5th).

Fearful unity

As a result, almost only the hosts played. Coach Daniel Scherning’s team cowered in fear in their own half and tried nothing more than to prevent the second goal from being conceded. However, the Magdeburgers lacked the accuracy to increase the result early on.

It took 25 minutes before Lino Tempelmann fired the first shot on goal for Eintracht, but the ball ended up in the stands. The only offensive sign of life from Lower Saxony, who had a desolate first half. The FCM dominated at will.

More offensive start

At the beginning of the second half, Braunschweig tried to play a little more offensively, but they didn’t pose any threat to score. There are reasons why Eintracht haven’t scored a goal since last November.

The Titz team quickly took control again. Eintracht keeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann had to show all his skills when he parried a long-range shot from Livan Burcu.

Braunschweig gets a penalty

It seemed only a matter of time before FCM scored the second goal. But then everything turned out differently.

Sebastian Polter was played with his back to the goal at the penalty spot and was clearly hit in the leg by Daniel Heber. Lino Tempelmann coldly converted the penalty to make it an extremely flattering 1-1 (69′).

Jaeckel with the chance to win

And just four minutes later, the ball suddenly fell at Paul Jaeckel’s feet, but the Eintracht defender was unable to shoot the ball from ten meters completely unchallenged into the Magdeburg goal.

Suddenly the game turned. The Magdeburgers seemed to be shocked, let the Braunschweigers play and were increasingly in danger.

Towards the end of the game, Magdeburg tried everything again, but Eintracht defended the draw with a lot of effort and will.

Magdeburg to the top game

Next Saturday (February 1, 2025, 1 p.m.) Eintracht Braunschweig will welcome 1.FC Cologne. 1.FC Magdeburg has to play the top game at FC Schalke 04 in the evening (8.30 p.m.).
