Steven Spielberg hailed Taylor Swift as a “unique,” courageous and even AI-defying artist at the Songwriters Hall of Fame on Thursday – and introduced her as “the youngest woman ever inducted.”
“A woman who is unafraid to break records – as a songwriter, singer and storyteller. A singular artist and a true phenomenon whose status in our culture rivals that of the composers of the Great American Songbook – that of Lennon and McCartney in the ’60s, and that of the singer-songwriters of the ’70s such as Carole King, Stevie ‘Let’s Go’ Nicks and your namesake James Taylor,” Spielberg said in his speech.
“Her iconic success is fueled by her innate gifts and the unconditional support of her family. Her fearless commitment to the rights of all artists reflects her deep understanding of how to navigate the meteoric fame she has navigated since her teenage years.”
Write history
The director continued, “She makes history tonight, and we witness another milestone as Taylor Swift fulfills her destiny as the most successful artist not only of our time, but of all time.”
“This performance reflects how her colleagues in the music industry view her exceptional songwriting skills – but also her willingness to collaborate and her respect for her producers, co-writers and all the songwriters who have influenced her since she first picked up a twelve-string guitar. Most people start with six strings, of course – but the fact that you were an overachiever at the age of twelve is no surprise to anyone here.”

Spielberg said that after Swift’s request to introduce her at the Songwriters Hall of Fame, he was initially “flattered and deeply honored” – but then nervously asked the AI for help in understanding the scope of her career. When he asked the AI how many words had been written about Swift and how many had been written by Swift herself, the AI failed to answer.
No algorithm for Swift
“The depth of their achievements defies any AI,” said Spielberg. “No algorithm can replace the soul of a true original that challenges the status quo and defies stereotypes.”
He added: “Taylor is a beacon for those who refuse to let others tell their story. Someone who takes artistic risks and shares her memories, grudges, thoughts and secrets with us for years to come. Through her songs, she has taken billions of people by the hand, touched their hearts and reached across the ramp with a message rooted in community and infused with hope and relatability.”
Swift explained in her own acceptance speech on Thursday why she asked Spielberg to introduce her – and also quoted from “Yellowstone.”
