“Felix Austria”, happy Austria: Stephanie Venier gave the Austrian ski association the first gold at the home World Cup. In the Super-G, the 31-year-old also drove the top favorite away. Emma Aicher landed in the top ten as the best German.

The following applies to world championships: First, it happens differently and secondly than you think. The predicted duel for super-G gold between the Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami and Federica Brignone from Italy did not exist. On the Zwölferkogel in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, an Austrian of all people made the favorite duo thwarted.

Venier counters Brignone – gold

Federica Brignone set the first fragrance mark on the very direct and quick course with start number six. Immediately after her, Stephanie Venier did even better and remained a tenth of a second during the Italian time.

Venier, in particular, mastered the wide jumps technically best, stayed a lot in the downhill crouch between the goals and thus pushed himself in one place.

“Good for the whole nation”

WM silver in the departure (2017) was the greatest success in the Tyrolean career. So now gold – and that before the enthusiastic home audience, which after the team competition, when ÖSV remained without a medal, left precious metal.

“Of course I drove for myself, but that’s good for the whole nation“, said an overjoyed Venier at the Sportschau microphone. “I chose a giant slalom ski, had a really good feeling and pushed from top to bottom.” The Innsbrucker could not really understand her triumph yet. “It’s all still strange”she said.

Emma Aicher faster than Lara Gut-Behrami

After Venier, Sofia Goggia, Lauren Macuga, Cornelia Hütter and Lara Gut-Behrami tried many higher athletes at Venier’s time. But for none it reached the front. Gut-Behrami even stayed 0.70 seconds over the best time and even landed behind Emma Aicher (+ 0.52), who could be happy about a top ten place.

The 21-year-old was only very just over medal course until the last time. The last goals did not put the German-Swedish directly enough and had to be satisfied with sixth place. Nevertheless, a strong result for the all -rounder who is in the sports show “very satisfied” showed.

Bronze awarded twice

The American Lauren Macuga and Norwegian Kajsa Vickhoff Lie ( + 0.24) came to bronze behind the silver medalist Brignone ( + 0.10 seconds). Just behind: Sofia Goggia (+ 0.30) and Emma Aicher.

Kira Weidle-Winkelmann disappointed across the board

In contrast, it was not at all for Kira Weidle-Winkelmann. The Starnberg woman did not get along with the fast run that she should have been. A gap of 1.89 seconds added up to the finish. In each individual section, the 28-year-old was clearly too slow.

“I didn’t get in at all and have to tick it off today. So full of focus on Saturday”according to Weidle-Winkelmann.

Lindsey Vonn, whose trainer had taken the run, came with the high start number 30, but did not reach the goal. After a decent best time, the 40-year-old drove fully into a goal in the upper part and hurt. Your hope is now resting on the departure on Saturday.
