Stefanos Tsitsipas actually wanted to compete for the title at the Australian Open. But after just one match it’s clear: that’s it.

First surprise at the Australian Open 2025: The Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas failed in the first round. The number eleven seed lost to the American Alex Michelsen 5:7, 3:6, 6:2, 4:6. This meant that Tsitsipas missed out on a place in the second round for the first time since 2018. Just two years ago he reached the final in Melbourne, but had to admit defeat to Novak Djoković.

The 26-year-old continues to search for his previous top form. Tsitsipas was already eliminated in the opening round of the US Open last year.

For the women, Coco Gauff started the tournament confidently. The 2023 US Open winner defeated her compatriot Sofia Kenin 6:3, 6:3. In the second round, the 20-year-old American will now face Jodie Burrage from Great Britain.
