Regarding his father, Stefano Bettarini recalled that he had been ill for some time, and that the last days were the most difficult of his entire long illness. «In the last 12 days» said the 52-year-old former defender, «he suffered a lot because the disease had now taken over. He wanted to die at homehe was hydrated by an IV.” And in his eyes «I read the disappointment of being seen like that by us, as if he were ashamed, but unfortunately it was the illness. He was in pain and we couldn’t do anything and the helplessness was killing us.” The mother, on the other hand, «is strong. Between marriage and engagement, she was with dad for 61 years.”
My first coach
The former footballer, however, clarified that the fact of having been next to his father until the end “today gives us strength because we really couldn’t have done more than what we did”. A father who, he recalled, «he was and is a point of reference: he was also my first coach because the first phone call after the matches was to him».
