Statement: Stricter language requirements for social assistance recipients to retain benefits

Municipalities must check more closely whether social assistance recipients can speak Dutch well enough and give them a lower benefit if that is not the case. Insiders report to this newspaper that Minister Thierry Aartsen (Work and Participation) will soon come up with these stricter rules. Municipalities that do not enforce the language requirement can be summoned and, in extreme cases, this will have financial consequences.
