Groningens Ontzet is already on the national list of intangible heritage. As far as departing Rector Cisca Wijmenga of the University of Groningen is concerned, ‘Bommen Berend’ will also be a day off.

,,Is it possible that we are not just free on such an important day?” Wijmenga says in a farewell interview in DVHN.

During the day Groningen Relief or Bommen Berend the liberation of the siege by ‘Bommen Berend’ in 1672 is celebrated. That always happens on August 28.

“Even now in light of the war in Ukraine, I think that the awareness of freedom is more relevant than ever,” says Wijmenga. “That you are aware of a piece of history of such a city where you live for a few years or are a passerby.”

What do you think, should employers (in Groningen) release their staff on August 28? Or do we already have enough public holidays? Respond to the statement of the day.
