The government, together with the municipality of Amstelveen, wants to improve the quality of life at the Kronenburg location by enabling the construction of 438 affordable student homes. Ministers De Jonge and Harbers have informed the House of Representatives about the possible development of the location. This is the first phase of the transformation of this area next to the Uilenstede student campus.

The intention for the Kronenburg location in Amstelveen has been for some time to develop homes that enhance the quality of life in the area. Moreover, the Amsterdam region faces a major challenge in the field of (student) housing. The municipality of Amstelveen and the government are now committed to developing approximately 438 (student) homes that will improve the quality of the living environment in the area. This number can be supplemented with short-stay homes, for occupancy no longer than 6 months. It has been agreed that by applying insights from noise-adaptive construction, carrying out interim evaluations and monitoring, it will be investigated whether further area development is possible.

Next steps

The new concept (plan) must be both economically and financially feasible. As soon as it has been elaborated, the Schiphol Airport Layout Decree (LIB) will be adjusted. The government’s aim is to ensure that this change in law runs parallel as much as possible with the required (planning) procedures. In the coming period, the agreements will be further developed into a concrete plan for the first phase of the development at Kronenburg.
