In Star Wars Episode IV, as Jon “Dutch” Vanders, he led the Rebel squadron that was supposed to destroy the Death Star.
Canadian actor Angus MacInnes has died at the age of 77. He became known through his appearance in several “Star Wars” films.
His family confirmed the news on Facebook on Monday (December 30). Their statement said: “To all Angus fans around the world, we write this with broken hearts: Angus MacInnes, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and actor, passed away on December 23, 2024. He left us peacefully, surrounded by his family and his love”.
Gold Leader’s sacrificial flight
The actor gained greater fame primarily through his role as Jon ‘Dutch’ Vander in “Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope” from 1977. As the bomber pilot Gold Leader, he leads an attack by a rebel squadron on the Death Star. However, Vander dies before he can fire his proton torpedoes at the Empire’s fortress.
The character reappeared in the 2016 prequel film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. With the actor’s permission, the filmmakers used archive material filmed in the 1970s and mixed it with a newly recorded audio track.
“A kind, thoughtful and generous soul”
“His work touched countless lives, and he was very proud to be a part of the stories that continue to delight audiences around the world,” his family wrote in the post. “Angus was more than an actor – he was a kind, thoughtful and generous soul who brought warmth and humor to the lives of everyone who knew him. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and fellow actors, but also by his fans around the world – his family thanks you all.”
MacInnes was born on October 27, 1947 in Windsor, Ontario. He made his film debut in the 1975 sci-fi sports flick “Rollerball.” His other roles included a gangster opposite Burt Lancaster and Susan Sarandon in “Atlantic City, USA” (1980), a retired ice hockey player in “Two Superbottles Clean Up” (1982) and a corrupt police officer in “The Only Witness” (1985) with Harrison Ford.
