Stade d’Olembé reopened

After the tragedy with eight dead and 38 injured, the Stade d’Olembé in Cameroon’s capital Yaoundé has been released again by the continental association CAF for the Africa Cup.

This means that a semi-final on Thursday and the final on Sunday can once again be played in the stadium, which was built at a cost of $300 million especially for the tournament.

Last Monday, before the round of 16 between Cameroon and the Comoros (2-1), the devastating mass panic broke out. The CAF announced that the circumstances of this tragedy had been dealt with in a report. The report also provided the recommendations to ensure that a tragedy of this kind never happens again.

The government had blamed many fans without tickets as the cause. They came to the stadium late to avoid ticket and corona checks. However, there were also reports to the contrary, raising serious allegations against the security forces.
