Squad value vs. purchase value: Newcastle team more expensive than FC Bayern

Team value vs. purchase value

It’s been almost exactly a year since the Saudi Arabian consortium led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman joined Newcastle United and heralded a major upheaval. From a sporting point of view, the investments have at least partially paid off, after staying up last year there is only one defeat after eleven match days and sixth place in the Premier League. However, a look at the Transfermarkt statistics “squad value vs. purchase value” shows that the expensive transfers are not yet reflected in the value of the team – in contrast to those of FC Bayern.

Newcastle spent 101.1 million euros in the winter and 136 million euros in the summer for a total of eleven new signings – with transfer fees of 2.3 million euros received. It is obvious that the squad will improve with such a high difference between expenses and income. With a squad value of 422.1 million euros, the “Magpies” are currently ranked 23rd in a global comparison and rank ahead of teams such as AS Roma or Real Sociedad. Just a year ago they were an underperforming Premier League team at €241m.

However, the increase in squad value for the northern English team is put into perspective in particular by comparing the sums that the teams paid for all their players. At around 455 million, Newcastle spent around more money on the 28 professionals in the squad than FC Bayern for Sadio Mané (30), Dayot Upamecano (23), Manuel Neuer (36) & Co. And yet the Munich team is in the lead with an overall value from 878.7 million euros in fourth place among the most valuable teams.

Compared to all other clubs, it is also noticeable that no club has such a large (positive) difference between expenditure and squad value as the German record champions. Behind Bayern, who have a difference of 427.2 million euros, FC Barcelona is already considerably behind with 346.2 million euros. The three youngsters Pedri (19), Gavi (18) and Ansu Fati (19) alone have a market value of 220 million euros and make up a large part of this difference, as do the free summer newcomers Franck Kessié (25) and Andreas Christensen (26), Héctor Bellerín (27) and Marcos Alonso (31).

On the other hand there are expensive newcomers with a significantly lower market value today, such as Frenkie de Jong (25) or Ousmane Dembélé (25). One looks in vain for precisely those examples in the Bayern squad: Lucas Hernández (26) is the only player for whom the transfer fee (€80 million) is well above the current market value (€50 million). Instead, a large part of the team was committed for comparatively little money and was able to increase the market value with the record champions. The quintet of Alphonso Davies (21), Joshua Kimmich (27), Leon Goretzka (27), Jamal Musiala (19) and Serge Gnabry (27) cost a total of 26.7 million euros and is now worth 360 million euros .

Manchester United with the largest negative difference – Only Man City cracks a billion

Besides Newcastle, only one other club among the 100 (!) most valuable clubs in the world has a negative difference between squad value and purchase value: Manchester United. With 892.6 million euros, the “Red Devils” invested more in their own players than their city rivals Manchester City. The Skyblues, who are the only team to exceed the billion mark for both values, just manage a positive difference of 40.7 million euros. United, on the other hand, has a negative balance sheet of 100.3 million through transfers such as Harry Maguire (29), Anthony Martial (26), Fred (29) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (24) – 84 million market value with 261 million transfer fee .Euros and scores even worse than Newcastle in this statistic.
