Squad for World Cup qualification: 21 runners-up European champions in the DFB squad

Status: 08/23/2022 2:21 p.m

National coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg is counting on 21 European runners-up champions for the two remaining qualifying games for the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Only the injured defender Marina Hegering (VfL Wolfsburg) and the substitute goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger (Chelsea FC) are missing from the squad announced by the German Football Association on Tuesday (08/23/2022) in Frankfurt/Main.

First Turkey, then Bulgaria

For the two away games on September 3 (2.45 p.m.) in Turkey and three days later in Bulgaria (6.30 p.m.), Voss-Tecklenburg nominated three non- EM riders in the 24-strong squad.

Substitute goalkeeper Tufekovic is the only newcomer. Dzsenifer Marozsan (convalescence after a cruciate ligament rupture) and Melanie Leupolz (pregnancy) are still missing.

“Taking momentum from the European Championship”

After intensive and exhausting weeks during the European Championships in England, the batteries are mostly charged again. “Now we want to take the momentum from the European Championship into the World Cup qualification. We have the clear goal of completing the qualification with two wins and putting in a convincing performance on the pitch“said Voss-Tecklenburg.

The European Championship runner-up is currently leading qualifying group H with a three-point lead over Serbia. Only the top of the table qualifies directly for the World Cup taking place in Oceania from July 20 to August 20, 2023. 32 nations will take part for the first time.
